Workshops EDC 2010Workshops on European Development Co-operation (EDC 2010), morning sessionsRoom B: New Instruments for Financing the MDGs: the current debate Organisers: CeSPI , Rome Chair: :Alberto Mazzali , Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale, CeSPI, Italy Speakers: Luca De Fraia , Action Aid International Peter Wolff , Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik, DIE Abstract: The Zedillo Report (UN 2001) indicates that an extra 50 billion dollars p.a. are needed in order to achieve the MDGs by 2015. In September 2004 the work of the Landau and Quadripartite Commissions were presented at the UN Summit for Action against Hunger and Poverty. The relevance of this debate tends to increase as the first major report on progress towards the MDGs approaches: Millennium+5 Summit. September 2005. The question of how to finance the Millennium challenges interfaces complex issues, such as how resources should be used, by whom, how to guarantee the additionality of the new funds and especially the implications for current modes of Development Cooperation. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the most feasible innovative financial mechanisms, from the point of view of policy makers, NGOs and academics. Specifically, the aim is to highlight the complexity of the debate, but also to construct positive indications on the best way forward. back to Conference Programme |
