Parallel Sessions IVC) Local Municipalities: Partners in Development Policy and Peace-KeepingConveners:Ulrich Nitschke, Capacity Building International (InWent)/Service Point Communities in the One World, Bonn, Germany Chair: Anita Reddy, InWEnt SKEW, Bonn, Germany Speakers: Debra Roberts, Head, Environmental Management Department, eThekwini Municipality, South Africa Gunther Hilliges, former Director of the department of development cooperation of the Land Bremen, Germany Abstract: The aim of the panel discussion is to present the concrete contribution of local communities and authorities to development policy and peace keeping. What can successful City-to-City partnerships achieve today? What connects the benefits of development policy and local economic and human capital? What political opportunities does local good governance offer to European peace policy? Development Policy can be most effective if it is rooted in the active involvement of people at the local level. Based on the joint effort of engaged citizens and local authorities sustainable transformation processes can be initiated and successfully implemented in concrete local transformation projects. The communities are the place for multi-stakeholder dialogues between the civil society, the business community and political decision makers. As trustworthy and effective partners local decision makers and communities are increasingly playing an important role in Peace-keeping and Crisis resolution. Their ability to effectively initiate and stabilise democratisation processes will be presented and investigated in the panel. Session Report back to the Conference Programme |
