Abstract:

The Korean Peninsula has been the theatre of continued international and regional tensions for many decades. After a short phase during the Clinton Administration and a new policy approach from South Korea (Sunshine Policy, Policy for Peace and Prosperity), the international community meanwhile is again challenged by a possible regional nuclear arms race. The central issue is, whether peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula could be better achieved by a policy focusing on confrontation or by an engagement policy.
