Abstract:

The increase of social vulnerability for broad sectors of the population in Latin America has made the elite in power and the democratic regimes lose their legitimacy for being unable to solve the everyday problems of their citizens. Based on the identification of some of the key factors of Latin American economical and social insecurity, the panel "Economic and Social Insecurity in Latin America: what policies have to be changed?" has two main objectives:

  • Present a series of initiatives developed by different social actors to respond to this situation (participatory citizenship, initiatives to counter poverty and social exclusion, etc.);
  • Highlight potential global political orientations that would lead to a sustainable socio-economic development, a decrease of social inequalities and of the different types of violence encountered in Latin America
